Foster Care

The Crisis

LA County has one of the largest populations of children in the foster care system in the United States.  Over 35,000 children have experienced abuse and neglect and are without the love of a strong family. This justice issue is also interconnected with homelessness and human trafficking.

God’s Heart

The Bible reveals God’s heart for the widow and orphan. It also reveals God’s heart for the church to care for these vulnerable children and families. The church is the hope of the world and we are called to bring hope and healing to these little ones. (James 1:27, Isaiah 58:6-9, Isaiah 1:17, Psalm 82:3, Matt 25:35, Mark 9:37)

Care Communities | Why support a foster family?

Here are some ways to get involved:
Join a Care Community

We believe in the importance of the local church to stand in the gap in this crisis. However, many foster families need help. Only 50% of foster families make it beyond the first year. With the help of care communities, the foster family has a retention rate of 90%. In addition, every third care community generates a new foster family, as people are spurred on to take an increased step of faith to be involved.

A Care Community is a team of 6-8 committed volunteers that act as an extended family to support a foster family or safe families. The support of a Care Community is unique to each family but includes things such as bringing meals, supplying or sourcing practical needs (clothing, furniture, school supplies), mentoring kids, tutoring, and praying for the family.

If you would like to learn more about joining a Care Community or receiving help from a care community email kingdom@cachurch.com and someone will follow up with you.

Open Your Home

Become a Volunteer Host

Volunteer Hosts open their homes to children whose parents are experiencing a short-term emergency or a longer-term crisis. Designed to extend and strengthen the community safety net for at-risk families, temporary hosting is a positive alternative to the state child welfare system, allowing parents to work out their problems without having to worry about losing custody of their children.

Hostings range from a few nights to several months, and you don’t need to have extra bedrooms in order to host.

Foster and Foster to Adopt

Foster families provide a safe, temporary home to children removed from their families as parents work on their reunification case plans. Foster to Adopt is the process of becoming a forever home to a child or children whose parental rights have been terminated.

Christian Assembly is partnering with Olive Crest, a non-profit organization that seeks to transform the lives of at-risk children through the power of family. Whether you decide to get certified with Olive Crest, another Foster Family Agency (FFA), or DCFS directly, Christian Assembly will come alongside you in the process.

The certification process takes on average 6-9 months. Learn more and get started here:

FOSTER + ADOPT PRE-APPLICATION

Family Gathering of Foster and Adoptive Parents

A group of foster and adoptive parents who meet to connect and support one another through life’s adventures. We are building community with each other and for our kiddos to have a safe place to celebrate our wins, seek advice in the hard places, and share resources.

Hosted by Jeanne Calva, an Olive Crest Parent Mentor and foster/adoptive Mom of six – three of whom joined through adoption. Ana Vargas and Anne Moore, also parent mentors, will be co-leading. Ana adopted her two grandchildren and Anne has raised eight kiddos- with whom five were adopted.

For more information about the Foster/Adoptive Family Gathering, please text or email Jeanne Calva at (626) 483-6869 or Jeanne-Calva@olivecrest.org

Adopt an International Student for Thanksgiving

As a family or a member of a life group, it would be a great opportunity to invite an international student to join your family for Thanksgiving.  Many of these students have never seen a Christian home and are alone for this holiday.  Families or life groups interested would be matched to an international student from USC and be responsible for contacting the student(s), picking up and dropping off the students and sharing a Thanksgiving meal with them.

We are looking for volunteers to host international college students from USC for a Thanksgiving meal at their homes. If you are interested, register here.

Providing Supplies

If your life group or you would like to serve in other ways such as providing supplies, etc., please contact us and we would love to have a conversation with you.

For questions, please email the CA leaders of this ministry at ca.istudents2025@gmail.com.

If you are interested in being a part of these regular outreach events, please sign up here.
